Today I’d like to introduce Gary Teel and Mindy Wright, the talented radio personalities of my favorite 80’s station, Wave 80 Radio. I’ve grown quite fond of this charming musical duo over the past few months, and if you love 80’s pop culture, music, and trivia as much as I do, you just might want to tune in for their Friday Night All-Request New Wave Party. Don’t forget to click on the chat box to say hello, take in a few laughs, or simply put in a request or two. (It’s a lot of fun.) So, without further ado, let’s share some time!

Hello, Wave 80! Thanks for dropping by. Please tell everyone a bit about yourselves.
Gary: Well, I’m the Gary half of Gary and Mindy… We’re from Salem, Illinois. I’ve worked in radio for most of my adult life, but I’ve been out of it now for 15 years. While local radio is fun, you can’t make a living at it! I started Wave 80 back in April of 2016 as a way to help scratch the radio itch, and to my delight, it turns out that Mindy found it just as fun and fascinating as I did!
Mindy: I had never been involved in broadcasting before, but I have always loved music. As Gary’s little station began slowly taking over my family room, it didn’t take long for me to catch the radio bug, too. I like finding the perfect song to match the day or the situation, whether it’s Halloween or National Hot Dog Day!
I’m obsessed with 80s music (all music, really) and a huge fan of Wave 80 Radio. What made you decide to choose this style/genre/decade for your station?
Gary: The 80s were my “Glory Days,” thank you, Mr. Springsteen. I think the 80s were a special time in music, when technology allowed for amazing recordings, but the human element was still there, as people were still writing real songs with real music. There are the great songs that everyone remembers, but there were some incredible tunes that maybe spent a few weeks on the Top 40 and then disappeared that I wanted to bring back and spotlight. Wave 80 is my attempt to present a good balance all of these songs. I also wanted to play all of the popular styles of the day, just like the Top 40 stations of the 80s did. There was no distinction between pop, rock, new wave, R&B… It was all just Hit Radio, which is why we call ourselves 80s Hit Radio.
Mindy, (happy, happy birthday to you) tell us more about Groove Tunes Radio. You play the best 70’s songs! Where can everyone find your station?
Mindy: You can listen at GrooveTunesRadio.com. There’s also a link on Wave 80’s website. I have always liked more of the 60s and 70s music… Bee Gees, early Chicago, America, ABBA… After hinting around that I had a huge collection of these songs, enough to start a whole new station, we finally launched GrooveTunes on my birthday last
Gary, I simply have to ask about your super-cool classic rock/blues band, Triple Threat. How did that come about?
Gary: Drummer Randy Wooden and I had played together before… We found this incredible young guitarist, Alex Woolridge, who at the tender age of 22 could play ZZ Top and CCR like the masters themselves. We’ve been together for a little over a year now and just enjoy playing together.
Mindy, do you sing or play an instrument as well?
Mindy: I played percussion in high school, and I join in with reunion concerts from time to time. Other than that, I enjoy singing karaoke and listening to Gary’s band!
Like many natural artists/musicians/talents/ the two of you seem to eat, sleep, and breathe music, what other kinds of things do you like to do for fun? Favorite hobbies?
Mindy: My son is involved in theater, and we love going to see his plays. We like movies, especially the Marvel movies! And I love photography.
Gary: She really is an awesome photographer, though she has no idea! Really, my only non-musical interest is genealogy. And family, of course. My daughter is married and gave us a beautiful granddaughter last year! My son-in-law is a Marine, so we don’t get to see them very often. Thank goodness for social media!
Negativity is all around us, and for some, it can feel quite overwhelming. What the two of you put out there and share with the world can be a soft place to fall; a place to shut out that negativity for a little while and enjoy one of the greatest gifts we can receive; a melody. Thank you for sharing your positivity and love of music with everyone…we receive it with gratitude!
